Town of Fort Fairfield
School Consolidation Process

To the Citizens of Fort Fairfield:

As you may be aware the State Legislature has passed a comprehensive bill on the consolidation of the educational system in this State.  The bill has set new guidelines for how our school systems will be administered and governed.  It also has significant ramifications as to how education will be funded.

The Town Council and the School Board have had several meetings and have formed a Community Planning Committee that will be evaluating the law and it’s impact on Fort Fairfield.  This committee has elected a Negotiating Team that will eventually be meeting with other communities to potentially form a new governing structure that will oversee the education of our students.

It is extremely important that we do not lose sight of the fact that we have decreasing numbers of students in this State (and in Fort Fairfield) with significant increases in costs to not only educate but to manage this system.  Through the referendum process the voters have been very clear that they need tax relief.  The Governor and the Legislature have responded to this demand with this legislation.  Their goal is to better utilize educational resources by consolidating the administrative functions to create a more efficient system.

It is our responsibility to ensure that what ever we decide to do, that it is in this community’s best interest.  This web page is designed to provide you with easy access to the information that is currently available and to contact people should you have questions or concerns.  We need your input; you need to be informed, as you will be asked to vote on a plan that will alter how education is provided to our students.

We hope you find this venue for information helpful as you learn about this new law that is impacting our educational system.

My experience with Fort Fairfield is that we do a credible job in building consensus in a positive and proactive manner regarding community issues.  I fully anticipate that with your help we will be able to make sound decisions that will serve our community well.

Sincerely,

Dan K. Foster
Town Manager
