Club has two or more achievements in four avenues of service
Rotary
is an organization of business and professional persons united
worldwide who
provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical
standards in all vocations and
help build goodwill and peace in the world.
The
object of Rotary is: to encourage and foster the ideal of
service as a basis of
worthy enterprise in the four AVENUES OF SERVICE: Club
Service, Vocational
Service, Community Service and International Service.

Projects
- Five
$1,000 scholarships to graduating FFHS students annually.
- Provide
over $500 in support for the United Way of Aroostook which
supports "Child Abuse and Neglect Council to prevent
Child Abuse", "The Battered Women's Shelter,"
the homeless shelter, and Helping Hands which provides parental
education for adults with poor parenting skills.
- Sponsored
a youth exchange student from Brazil for this past year
1998-99.
Club
Service
- Rotary
information presented each week by senior Rotarian to keep
club members abreast of new information by Rotary International(RI).
Program is called Rotary minute, where important RI issues
are discussed as well as frequent discussions on rules governing
RI as they apply to our club.
- Interact
club members are invited to club meetings to report on activities
of their club.
- The
Fort Fairfield Rotary Club had 5 of its 39 members attend
a district conference in Presque Isle.
- Ken
Gilman, our treasurer, volunteered to provide district-
sanctioned annual giving talks to the eight rotary clubs
of Aroostook County. Seven of the eight programs have been
provided to this point.
- 0ur
club of 39 will honor two members of the club/community
with Paul Harris fellowships at our annual meeting in June.
The Paul Harris contributions have already been paid to
RI.
Vocational
Service
- We
issue five $1,000 scholarships to graduating FFHS students
annually.
- Club
Psychologist and Occupational Therapist regularly attend
"Career Day" for High School students exploring
vocational opportunities.
- Supported
literacy programs via the United Way of Aroostook in Houlton,
Caribou and the St. John Valley.
- Club
financially supports "Mid-County Career Day,"
Teen Leadership Conference as well as funding one
student's attendance at Dirigo Boys' or Girls' State.
The last two
are confidence and leadership building events to help our
youth learn to be the leaders of tomorrow.
- One
club member has volunteered 50 hours of his professional
time to help landscape a fountain in town that is being
erected for a community leader who passed away this past
year.
Community
Service
- Support
our local Interact Club with a five-person committee to
support their activities, and act as mentors if needed.
- In
cooperation with Knights of Columbus and VFW put on community
Thanksgiving dinner for shut-ins and lonely elderly members
of community. All left over food went to local soup
kitchen.
- Provided
meal preparation and catering services for the Chamber of
Commerce's Citizen of the year recognition dinner.
- Purchased
a second set of banners to place on the other two streets
to compliment those already on Main Street, as a continued
beatification and revitalization project for our community.
- Provided
significant monetary support ($1,000) of Fort Fairfield's
Potato Blossom Festival.
- Supported
community Christmas Baskets in cooperation with the Chamber
of Commerce.
- Through
our annual United Way of Aroostook Garage Sale, we provided
over $500 support for the United Way programming. This supports
"Child Abuse and Neglect Council to Prevent Child Abuse,"
"The Battered Women's Shelter," "The Homeless
Shelter," and "Helping Hands." Helping
Hands provides parental education for adults with poor parenting
skills.
- Our
Rotary Club continues to be a leader in providing funding
to the "DARE (Drug & Alcohol Resistance Education)
Program" for 5th and 8th graders.
International
Service
- Supported
District World Project with the Edmundston, New Brunswick
Club.
- Sponsored
a youth exchange student from Brazil for this past year
1998-99.
- Have
elected to take on another exchange student for the year
1999-2000, with two club members to take on the role as
counselor.
- Made
a financial contribution to those affected by hurricane
Mitch in Central America.
- The
Fort Fairfield Rotary Club of Maine and the Perth-Andover
Rotary Club of New Brunswick have at least one or two inter-club
function a year, furthering international
relationships.
- Upon
request from Past District Governor Tom Gagnon, the Fort
Fairfield and Perth-Andover Rotary Clubs co-sponsored the
district's annual golf tournament at the Aroostook Valley
Country Club. There were 19 four-person teams from
throughout the district. The event was capped off
with a dinner, and awards ceremony.
- The
Fort Fairfield Rotary Club has a member who is planning
a trip to Africa in December. The club is working
with Julius Knoetz to establish a World Community Service
Project. The project has begun but needs to be refined
and receive approval from RI. We hope to designate
one of our two Paul Harris Fellows to this project.
