Fort Fairfield Recreation and Parks Happenings
Hot Shot Basketball-The local Hot Shot Basketball qualifier for boys and girls ages 9-18 as of March 31, 2017 will be held at the community center on Monday and Thursday, February 13 and 16 from 4:30-6:00pm. Participants can shoot on one or on both days of qualifying with only their best score from the two days counting. The age groups for Hot Shots are 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 16-18 with boys competing separate from girls. The top three scorers in each age group advance to the Regionals in Caribou on March 9. The State Championship will be held in Presque Isle on March 18, 2017.
K of C Free Throw Contest-The annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest will be held at the community center on Friday, February 17 starting at 3:00pm. The event is for boys and girls ages 9-14 as of January 1, 2017. The competition is divided into six age groups with the boys competing separate from the girls. Winners in each age group will advance to the District level of Competition which will also be held here in Fort Fairfield on Saturday, February 25. The State Championship will be held in Old Town on March 11.
Snow Tubing-On Wednesday, February 22 the parks and recreation department is sponsoring a field trip to Big Rock Mountain to go snow tubing from 9:00am-12:00 noon. The bus will leave the community center at 8:30am and return at 12:30pm. The cost is $10 which includes pizza and soda. Participants must be at least nine years of age to attend or be accompanied by a responsible chaperone. Registration forms are available at school or the community center and must be filled out and returned prior to the date of the trip.
Ice Skating-On Tuesday, February 21 the parks and recreation department is sponsoring a field trip to the Forum in Presque Isle for free ice skating from 9:30-11:30am. Skate rentals are available for $1 at the Forum for those who need skates. The bus will depart from the community center at 9:00am and return at approximately 12:00 noon. Participants must be at least nine years of age to attend or be accompanied by a responsible chaperone. Registration forms are available at school or the community center and must be filled out and returned prior to the trip.
Movie at the Caribou Theater-On Thursday, February 23 the parks and recreation department is sponsoring a field trip to the Caribou Theater for a movie starting at 10:00am. The movie to be shown has not yet been determined but will be appropriate for all ages. The bus will depart from the community center at 9:30am and return at approximately 12:00noon. The cost is $6 which includes transportation, movie admission, popcorn and soda.
Swimming-On Friday, February 24 the parks and recreation department is sponsoring a field trip to the indoor pool in Limestone to swim from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm. The bus will leave the community center at 11:30am and return at 2:30pm. The cost is $2 per person. Participants must be at least nine years of age to attend or be accompanied by a responsible chaperone.
Free Skating at the Forum-Fort Fairfield residents can skate for free at the Forum in Presque Isle beginning Saturday, December 24 and continuing through Sunday, February 26, 2017 (end of February school vacation). In order to gain access to the Forum for free skating, each Fort Fairfield resident must present picture identification at the ticket window that includes proof of residency. Adult Basketball-Adult basketball is being played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Fort Fairfield Community Center Gymnasium from 6:00-8:00pm. Play is informal with teams being selected each night from all those in attendance.
Adult Volleyball-Adult Co-ed Volleyball is held every Sunday evening at the Fort Fairfield Community Center from 6:00-8:00pm. The program is for individuals high school age and over with play being informal and teams being selected each night from all those in attendance. There is no charge to play. Indoor Walking, Running, and Exercise-The Fort Fairfield Community Center gymnasium and exercise area are open to the public for walking, running, and exercise Monday through Friday from 6:00am-12:00noon (except holidays). The hours are subject to change occasionally and will be posted accordingly. Walkers are encouraged to register for the “New Year Walk” which begins January 1, 2017. You will have a chance to win a prize based on your walking effort and overall improvement during the winter months. There is no charge to participate.
Cross-Country Ski Rentals-The parks and recreation department is renting out cross-country ski packages again this winter to boys and girls in grades 2-8. The cost to rent a complete package for the entire ski season is $25 for the first family member and $20 for each additional child in the family. Contact the parks and recreation department (472-3882) to make an appointment to pick up your ski package for the season.
Youth Cross Country Ski Program-The parks and recreation department will be conducting an after school cross-country ski program again this winter for boys and girls in grades 2-6 beginning on Thursday, February 2 and ending when the snow is gone at winters end. The youth ski program will be held on Thursday afternoons from 3:00-4:15pm. Skiers will meet in the Fort Fairfield Elementary School cafeteria directly after school. Participants will be taught the basics of cross-country skiing, proper ski care, and all sorts of fun ski games and activities. The kids will also ski at the Nordic Heritage Center occasionally to experience the fantastic trails and opportunities of this great facility. There is no charge to participate.
NHSC Saturday Morning Kids Ski Club-The Nordic Heritage Sport Club will be hosting the Saturday Morning Kids Ski Club again this winter at the Nordic Heritage Center on Saturdays from 10:00am-12:00 noon starting on February 4, 2017. The eight week program for boys and girls in grades 2-8 will continue through the end of March under the instruction of former FFHS Ski Coach Paul Lamoreau, assisted by student instructors from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. There is no cost to participate and you can register for the program on Saturday mornings prior to the 10:00am start.
Ski/Snowshoe at the NHC-Cross-Country Skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts of all ages are encouraged to venture out to the Nordic Heritage Center to enjoy the excellent early season trail conditions on the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. Ski trails are groomed regularly and are open to the public seven days a week (trail lit night skiing Monday-Friday until 8:00pm).
Open Gymnasium-The Fort Fairfield Community Center Gymnasium and game room are open to the public for free play on Friday and Saturday evenings (except when there is a varsity basketball home game) from 6:00-8:30pm and Sunday afternoons from 12:00-3:00pm. The game room is open for students Monday through Friday after school from 3:00-5:00pm. During school vacations, holidays, and early school release days the community center will be open to the public for free play from 12:00-4:00pm. The hours for open play are subject to change occasionally due to bad weather and other scheduled activities and special events.
Indoor Soccer-Indoor Soccer for boys and girls in grades 2-8 will be held on Tuesday and Friday afternoons at the community center beginning on Tuesday, February 28 and ending on Friday, April 14. The program is co-ed with grades 2-3 playing from 3:00-4:00pm; grades 4-5 playing from 4:00-5:00pm; and grades 6-8 playing from 5:00-6:00pm. Registration forms will be available at school or the community center starting on February 15.
Please Return Uniforms-A reminder to all that the parks and recreation department is still missing several uniforms that have not yet been returned by participants from programs and activities held this past year (and years prior). If you have any uniforms that belong to the parks and recreation department, please return them to the Fort Fairfield Town Office or the recreation and parks department office at the community center. In order for us to continue providing youth activities at little or no cost to the children of Fort Fairfield, we rely on these uniforms being returned in a timely manner after each sports season.
